Gili Trawangan is the largest of three Lombok’s Gili Islands (Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air) and is the only Gili’s which significantly above sea level. It is 3 km long and 2 km wide with a population of about 800. Gili Trawangan offers a white sand island, surrounded by turquoise water with good sunrise over Lombok’s Mount Rinjani volcano and superb sunsets that can be seen from sunset point on the south tip of the island. On Gili Trawangan there are no motorized vehicles.
The main transportations are bicycles (rented by locals to tourists) and cidomo (a small horse-drawn carriage). For traveling to and from each of the Gilis, locals usually use motorized boats and speedboats. The life of Gili Trawangan centers on tourism, as the island is too small to support any broad scale agriculture, and too remote for economical industry or commerce.

Some of the first inhabitants of Gili Trawangan were from Sulawesi who is fishermen and farmers. You wouldn’t encounter any dogs in any part of the island because most of the people in Gili Islands are Muslims. There are lots of cats in Gili Islands. And it is said that there are more cats than people inhibiting the Gili Trawangan Island.
For visitors, people in Gili Trawangan provide many hotels and villas. One of the most popular hotels there is Hotel Villa Ombak. It is directly located in front of the harbor.
